Why was Mahmoud Khalil Arrested ?

• The Agency: Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
• The Reason: His activism for Palestinian rights and involvement in pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University.

NPR: After 104 days in a Louisiana immigration detention center (arrested March 8, 2025) Columbia graduate Mahmoud Khalil has been released on bail.

Mahmoud Khalil was released from federal custody on Friday, June 20, 2025, more than three months after immigration agents arrested and detained him as the first student targeted for deportation by President Trump's crackdown on pro-Palestinian protesters.

Khalil's legal team said they planned to quickly get him on a plane back to New York, where he'll reunite with his wife and his two month old son, who was born while he was in detention. NPR

Khalil plans to continue advocating for Palestinian rights and protesting the war in Gaza, according to NPR. 

He has also expressed interest in continuing to engage with lawmakers to promote his cause, reports Al Jazeera. .... 

“Let’s be clear, Mahmoud was detained for his political speech,” said Professor Nadia Abu El-Hajj, co-director of Columbia’s Center for Palestine Studies.

Another Columbia professor, Marianne Hirsch, the daughter of Holocaust survivors who grew up in communist Romania, said the arrest “brought back my most tormenting childhood memories.”

Khalil is thought to be the first person targeted by the Trump administration as part of its pledge to deport international students involved in protests against the war in Gaza.  (JVP- Religion News)

No Votes for Genocide - Shut It Down

 Just a few days before our presidential election, the palis and their socialist contingent were on the streets of NYC- again- with their latest chants and signs making it clear. They HATE America. So, Why Vote?

 

Nov 2, 2024 Shutitdown4palestine gathered in Union Square to encourage NO Votes for Genocide -for the U.S. politicians COMPLICIT in genocide on Nov 5th. So... I guess they won't be voting.

 

Always obedient , the chanting is well -rehearsed in the echoing of the leader:
"Imperialism will Fall. Brick by Brick.Wall by Wall. Every Fascist State will Fall."
"Refugees will return. In our thousands in our millions. We are all Palestinians....
and From the Sea to the River. Palestine will live forever."

New (for me) was an odd group-chant of SHAME that was creepy.
A bit like a cow-mooing in between the laundry list of why they should not VOTE.

BUT, the New-JDL had a counter-demonstration to "Honor the Victims NOT the Killer, Rasmea Odeh".

They were there to counter the Samidoun LIES with FACTS: Rasmea Odeh is a terrorist convicted of the murder of two young Jews, Edward Joffe and Leon Kanner on Feb. 21st, 1969.

They were killed in an explosion in an Israeli market. Odeh murdered them, yet she was being honored  at a rally in Union Square Park.

"The public must be made aware that she is a convicted murderer and not a victim. The public must be made aware that Edward and Leon are the victims. Please join us and help fight the lies of radical Islamics and their supporters." [Face Book]

The JDL gathered "at the steps in the southern plaza" before the Samidoun arrived, creating a dilemma of sorts for the anti-Zionists. Now they couldn't display their signs on the steps as planned.

But, did they have a Plan B? Perhaps not, as the Samidoun stood around laughing, smirking and pointing at the JDL while they pondered what to do next.

A decision was finally made to walk in a circle (they love going round and round) and that they did while chanting "Racists go Home".

Eventually, some of the younger terrorist-lovers did the predictable, standing in front of the JDL signs.Then some of the younger JDL's became more vocal as they two sides edged closer and closer  finally coming nose to nose just as the NYPD arrived.

 The JDL counter-protest was VERY successful proving it does NOT take an army to weaken the resolve of these radicals - even though that may be brief - it was FUN to watch their confusion. They were obviously expected only SUPPORT for their murderous darling, Rasmea Odeh.

Interestingly, the NYPD officers seemed almost bemused as they placed barricade after barricade between the two groups, building a Wall to keep the PEACE.

Maybe there's something to be said for walls, PEACE and safety from the violent animus of WAR-mongers like Samidoun and Hamas.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas share certain goals and values. To each, it is not a question of whether a peaceful settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is possible. It never will be acceptable. What is acceptable is violence against civilians. [investigative project]

 SO, Goodbye and Good Riddance to Rasmieh Odeh

The creation of a state of terror, instability and panic in the souls of the Zionists" is a goal spelled out in the Islamic Jihad's internal bylaws [...] Hamas unveiled an updated charter this year [...] it remains committed to never recognizing Israel's right to exist and demands "the full and complete liberation of Palestine : "from the river to the sea".

#NoMuslimBanEver Union Sq - speakers' agitprop, Part 3

June 29, 2017, Union Square - Part 3 continues with the rest of the "speakers-of-agitprop". [Follow links for Part One ; Part Two]

All came prepared to " mobilize against the partial Trump Travel Ban."

This final post is excerpted speeches and, later, a look at the "wild side" when they got to 18th street -  32BJ SEIU HQ - and met up with #BacktheBan protestors.



To begin, Murad Awawdeh , NYIC's Director of Political Engagement, led the crowd in practice chants "We Exist, We RESIST",  finishing with a pep talk, "YOU are important. As soon as info comes out use  Social media . Text!"



First speaker was Afaf Nasher, Exec. Dir. of CAIR - NY. "Our values are loud and clear to the four corners of the globe. We are here to reaffirm what America really stands for. To reaffirm what America really LOOKS like. To really affirm the United States of America."



Three speakers followed: Rev. Chloe Breyer, Exec Dir Interfaith Center: "... representing so many Faith TRADITIONS that make this city great. It is our DIVERSITY that is our strength." ; a Yemini American Muslima, "(has family living in Yemin).  "A country representing Yemin, facing one of the worst humanitarian crises of our times."and Y. Mendez, an organizer from Make The Road NY. "Here to make sure the current administration knows, to remind the United States is a country of immigrants, we are here to stay regardless of how the administration wants to affect us."




The final speakers : a staff attorney from CUNY Clear . "We don't know how this is going to play out. We need to be organizing. Thank you for being here." And Rama Issa, Exec Dir of the Arab. Amer. Assoc. NY. "Family is family. We are very community oriented. Keep us in yur prayers. Hoping Supreme Court will see eye to eye with us in October."




Once at  32BJ SEIU HQ, the #NoMuslimBanEver protestors passionately lobbed chants and rants at the "offending" #BACKTHEBAN protestors. One  smarmy fellow danced to, "New York is an immigrant Town. What's Up. Get Down."




Wrapping up the protest was one very loud and long-winded "NoBanEver heckler., "Unity. Syrians are Human Beings. They're FULL human beings. Immigrants are FULL humnanbeings. MUSLIMS are FULL Human Beings." followed by lots of "Keep them out." "Back the Ban." and "Shame on you."




After the Town Hall Meeting - Training session, they headed for JFK where they fought back against the Travel Ban by offering, at the Mayor's behest, FREE legal aide.

 

MAYOR de Blasio - working AGAINST  American Security

It also coordinates with other members of Cities for Action, a coalition of nearly 100 mayors and municipalities that favor a liberalized immigration policy and oppose deportation.

This year’s theme was “resistance,” according to Rama Ibrahim Issa, executive director of the Arab American Association of New York, who emceed the event.

“We’re here to resist—to resist negativity and come together in unity and love, to break bread together in this amazing tradition that is iftar,” Issa said, to roaring applause from the hundreds-strong crowd.

At this rate, New Yorkers might need to practice that warm Muslim greeting,  As-salam Alaykum. Will we have a choice?

This is a people's march so we don't want to impose any rules but please remember this is a positive march.

 
We the organizers are requesting marchers to not engage in activities related to Hillary bashing.
